In 1881 Tōjirō Arai edited a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Kachō Sōmoku Saigashiki (i.e., Drawing Methods for Minute Paintings of Flowers, Birds and Plants). It included the forty pages of flower and (or) bird pictures included in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The anonymous artist drew the shapes of flowers and birds accurately but coloured them only in shades of gray. These pictures were intended to be used by artisans who decorated consumer goods.
